What is Bakugan? Bakugan is a fun new game from Sega Toys and Spin Master. It is based loosely on the hit Japanese cartoon series called ‘Bakugan Battle Brawlers’. ‘Baku’ means explode and ‘gan’ means ball. And that’s what Bakugan balls are – they are balls that pop open when they roll over a magnetic gate card to reveal a monster inside.

In essence the Bakugan game is a cross between marbles and trump cards. The objective of the game is to win 3 gate cards and thus secure victory. Two or more children (the game appeals more to boys) can play. Bakugan is suitable for children of 5 years and older. Players take turns to lay down a gate card and then roll a Bakugan ball. If the ball stops rolling on a gate card it pops open to reveal the nature of the monster contained within. There are many Bakugan balls available to buy. Sometimes it is not a Bakugan monster but a Bakugan trap that is revealed. This is all part of the strategy that children have to employ to outwit their opponents.

When two open Bakugan monsters find themselves on the same gate card then they must do battle. The gate card is turned over to reveal the G-power supplementary points that players must add to the G-power value of their Bakugan. This is the educational element to the game – children have to do a bit of mental arithmetic to get their Bakugan’s total G-power score.

However, that is not the end of the battle. Players can choose to deploy an ability card from their hand to boost their Bakugan’s total score. Also some Bakugan have battle gear which further boosts the Bakugan’s chances of victory.

You can get started playing Bakugan by buying the cheap Bakugan starter pack which contains 3 Bakugan balls and 3 gate cards. This is enough for one child to play. The Bakugan Battle Pack includes 2 character cards, three gate cards, 6 Bakugan balls, 2 command cards and one ability card. A child’s Bakugan collection can also be supplemented with Bakugan Bakutins which contain 2 Bakugan, 5 gate cards and 5 other cards. Like with trump cards there is a vast range of cards to collect. Having the right cards help children form a game strategy and aid them in victory.

The Bakugan balls themselves are great collectors’ pieces. The Bakugan range has an awesome variety that kids find totally absorbing. Some of the latest Bakugan such as the Bakugan 7 in 1 Maxus Dragonoid are individual spheres that open up and can be fitted together to make one mega-Bakugan very much in a similar way to the transformers toys that were huge in the 90s.
