Reading books
Reading is an excellent way to increase our knowledge and understanding of the world we live in. This does not mean that I advocate only reading non-fiction study books. Rather, the more we read, including fiction and non-fiction, the more ideas we are exposed to which may make us see things in different ways.
Watching the television is a vary passive way to spend our free time. I must admit that I enjoy certain programs myself however, in my opinion, it is a good thing to mix up our leisure time with a variety of different activities. I try to read for 30 minutes or so a day. This is long enough to get through books at a reasonable pace while at the same time not spending all my free time reading.
There are books on literally any subject that it is possible to have an interest in. Personally I enjoy reading fiction novels as the authors usually construct an amazing story that is really absorbing. Almost any book can be read purely for enjoyment which happens when we just get into the story and interested in the characters’ lives and what they are doing. Some books also have a deeper meaning that the author is trying to convey through his or her words to tackle an issue that is important to the writer. For example some books may be concerned with the writer’s desire for peace. Another example is the book To Kill a Mockingbird which deals with the theme of racism which the author Harper Lee appears to have felt strongly about. Science fiction books are another example of books that on the surface are pure enjoyment but can tackle themes about where this world is headed, ideas about the human race, control, technology and so on.
Books and novels contain so much knowledge that it is worth putting the time in to them. Reading stimulates the mind which can also make us more interesting people and have more to talk about with our friends when we go out for a meal or drink. There are many different ways we can spend our free time, reading a book is just one of them. Some other ways that we can enjoy ourselves include watching TV, using a computer or the internet, playing video games and reading novels as has already been discussed.
