The Benefits of Coconut Flooring
It is generally an accepted fact nowadays that climate change is real and that not only is it necessary to reduce carbon emissions but it is also vital to preserve the great forests of the world to absorb the surfeit of carbon that the world is producing. It is for these reasons that it is not environmentally friendly to buy hardwood flooring.
An attractive alternative to hardwood flooring is coconut flooring. Coconut is like bamboo, cork, jute and hemp in that it is a renewable resource. This means that it grows quickly. In fact coconut palms grow incredibly quickly. In just 6 years after planting a coconut it has reached maturity. The coconut palm is not a wood and as such doesn’t have knots in its ‘timber’. When the tree is young the timber is soft but after 60 or 70 years when the coconut palm has stopped producing coconuts the timber is much harder. Coconut palms that have stopped providing coconuts are called senile palms.
It is estimated that in Indonesia alone there are over 2 million senile palms that need replacing. And until recently senile palms were an unexploited resource. Now several Asian and South Pacific companies have realized the commercial and environmental benefits of using senile palm timber to make furniture, house ware and flooring.
Coconut flooring has a beautiful end grain that makes it very similar in appearance to hardwood flooring. Coconut flooring comes in vertical and horizontal flooring planks and also in strand woven flooring planks.
Coconut flooring is strong, durable and hard. It is capable of standing up to high traffic situations and heavy furniture. It is similar to hardwood flooring in that it is anti-allergenic flooring. It doesn’t allow any place for dust mites to live or breed. Dust mites are one of the major causes of allergic rhinitis.
Furthermore, coconut flooring can be installed in a number of ways. It can be laid in a floating installation, glued down to a concrete subfloor or nailed to a subfloor.
Another benefit is that coconut flooring is reasonably priced compared to hardwood flooring. You can get a good price for coconut flooring if you spend the time to look for several estimates.
So help the environment and the local economies of developing countries by buying coconut flooring instead of hardwood flooring.
