What is Bad Breath and How to Get Rid of it

Bad Breath is a problem that over 90 million people in the world suffer from. It varies in severity, and the causes of bad breath or halitosis also varies. However, the most common cause of unpleasant breath is poor oral hygiene. In this article I will briefly explain how you can tell if you have bad breath and what you can do to cure yourself of this problem.

To tell if you have bad breath, simply look at your tongue in the mirror. If your tongue is a whitish color the chances are that you have bad breath.

The first step you should take to cure bad breath is to regularly brush your teeth. It is best to brush your teeth after breakfast and lunch and before you go to bed. Spend time to brush your teeth thoroughly. This will lower your chances of getting rotten teeth and gum disease. Sometimes it is these ailments that cause bad breath. Also you should rinse your mouth with an antiseptic mouth wash after brushing your teeth. This will kill bacteria in your mouth and make your breath fresher.

The second step is to use dental floss. Flossing your teeth to remove the debris stuck between your teeth is now recommended by all dentists. It is often not possible to remove food stuck between your teeth by brushing alone. If food is left between your teeth it can lead to cavities, gum disease and bad breath. It only takes a few minutes to floss every night and flossing is an important part of good oral hygiene.

The third and most important step for getting rid of halitosis is to use a tongue cleaner or tongue scraper. A metal tongue scraper is best. You can buy a cheap metal tongue scraper either in a pharmacist or online by using the search phrase “where to buy a metal tongue cleaner”.

To use a tongue cleaner simply scrape along your tongue from the back to the front twice. The first time you use a tongue scraper you will be shocked to discover how much debris comes off your tongue. The tongue contains 90% of the bacteria found in the mouth. It is these bacteria that cause the bad sulfurous smell that is associated with bad breath. By cleaning your tongue every morning you improve your oral hygiene and drastically reduce your chances of having bad breath.

If you brush your teeth three times a day, floss every night, use a mouth wash and clean your tongue you should eradicate bad breath. If this doesn’t work then you should consult a doctor. You may have a more serious problem that is causing your bad breath.
